What are joint injections?

Joint injections are a targeted treatment used to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation within a joint. At Belfast Private GP, joint injections are carried out by experienced doctors following a full clinical assessment. This service is lead by Dr Magee who has performed over 4000 joint and soft tissue injections.

Depending on your symptoms and diagnosis, this may involve a corticosteroid (cortisone) injection to reduce inflammation, often combined with local anaesthetic to provide rapid pain relief. For knee arthritis, hyaluronic acid injections may also be offered to improve joint lubrication and movement.

Where appropriate, injections can be carried out on the same day as your consultation.

Benefits of joint injections

Joint injections can provide effective relief for a wide range of joint and soft tissue conditions. Benefits may include:

  • Reduced joint pain and inflammation
  • Improved movement and function
  • Rapid symptom relief, often within days
  • Targeted treatment directly to the affected area
  • Reduced need for oral pain medication

Joint injections are commonly used to manage conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, tendon inflammation, and nerve compression.

How your appointment works

  1. Step 1

    Consultation and suitability check

Your GP assesses the joint, reviews your symptoms, and confirms whether a steroid or hyaluronic acid injection is appropriate for you.

Important: A consultation is required before any injection can be carried out.
  2. Step 2

Injection on the day, if suitable

If appropriate, your injection is typically performed during the same visit, with guidance on what to expect afterwards.

  3. Step 3

    Aftercare guidance

You will receive tailored advice on activity, timing of symptom improvement, and next steps if you need ongoing support.

Frequently asked questions

What conditions can joint injections treat?
Joint injections are commonly used to treat arthritis, joint inflammation, bursitis, tendon problems, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, and knee pain or swelling.
Will the injection be done on the same day?
In many cases, yes. If your GP feels the injection is clinically appropriate, it can often be carried out during your initial consultation.
Are joint injections painful?
Discomfort is usually minimal. Local anaesthetic is often used to reduce pain during and immediately after the injection.
How long do steroid injections last?
Relief can last from several weeks to several months, depending on the condition being treated and individual response.
What is a hyaluronic acid knee injection?
Hyaluronic acid injections help lubricate the knee joint, reducing pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis.
Are there any side effects?
Most patients tolerate joint injections well. Your GP will discuss potential risks and side effects during your consultation.
Do I need a referral for a joint injection?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with Belfast Private GP.
Can I have more than one joint injected?
Yes, where appropriate. A second joint can be injected during the same visit if clinically suitable.
