The NHS is under pressure — but your health isn’t waiting
If you have tried to book a routine health review through your NHS GP recently, you will know the story. Waiting weeks for an appointment, a system stretched thin, and little time to go beyond the immediate concern. For many people in Belfast, that means health markers that should be monitored regularly — cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid function — quietly go unchecked.
A private health MOT is a way to take that back into your own hands. But what exactly does one involve, what does it tell you, and is it worth it? Here is a straightforward answer from the people who run them.
What is a health MOT?
The MOT analogy is deliberate. Just as you would not drive a car for years without checking whether everything is working correctly under the bonnet, a health MOT is a structured check of your key biological systems — before symptoms appear.
Unlike a GP appointment prompted by a specific problem, a health MOT is proactive. It is designed to give you a picture of where you currently stand, catch anything that might be developing silently, and give you the information you need to make better decisions about your health going forward.
What does a private health check actually test?
At Belfast Private GP, our wellness and MOT packages are built around evidence-based markers. Depending on the package you choose, a check can include:
- Full blood count — assessing your red cells, white cells, and platelets to flag anaemia, infection, or immune conditions
- Cardiovascular risk markers — including cholesterol (total, LDL, HDL), triglycerides, Apolipoproteins and blood pressure
- Metabolic health — HbA1c (long-term blood sugar) and fasting glucose to screen for type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes; insulin & cortisol levels.
- Liver and kidney function — checking how these vital organs are performing
- Thyroid function — TSH, T3, T4 and thyroid Antibodies
- Vitamin and mineral status — including vitamin D, B12, folate, and iron studies
- Inflammatory markers — such as CRP, which can indicate underlying inflammation
- Hormone panels — available in variety of health panels
More specialist panels are also available, including bespoke panels cardiovascular MOTs, fertility screening, sports performance panels, digestive health, and allergy testing. If you are unsure which package fits your situation, a short GP consultation can help you navigate the options. Find out more
Who processes the bloods?
Belfast Private GP uses Randox — one of the most respected diagnostics laboratories in the world, and headquartered right here in Northern Ireland. Results are typically returned within a few days, with an explanatory pdf result booklet and GP advice and commentary. Some of our packages also include a follow-up GP appointment to review findings and discuss next steps.
Do I need to feel unwell to book one?
No — and that is rather the point. The majority of people who attend our wellness checks feel perfectly well. Many of them leave with complete reassurance that their key markers are in range. Some leave with early findings — a borderline cholesterol level, a low vitamin D, a slightly raised blood sugar — that are far easier to address now than they would be in two or three years’ time.
Preventative care is not just for people who are worried. It is for people who want to stay well.
What does a health MOT cost?
At Belfast Private GP, general health screens start from only £119, with well-man and well-woman packages from £199, and cardiovascular and diabetes MOTs from £119. Comprehensive packages covering a broad range of markers are available up to £499. Full details and current pricing are shown when selecting a panel at the time of booking.
What about getting this through my GP?
In Northern Ireland there is no equivalent to the structured NHS Health Check programme that exists in England. While your GP can arrange individual tests if you raise specific concerns, proactive health screening is not routinely offered — and with the pressures on general practice in NI, getting an appointment to have that conversation in the first place is not always straightforward.
Private health screening is not about replacing your GP. It is about getting timely, detailed information about your own health without having to wait for a problem to become serious enough to justify an appointment.
How to book
You can book online directly, or contact the practice if you are unsure which package is right for you. A GP is available to advise on the most appropriate screening based on your age, family history, and health concerns.
