ADHD Medication Reviews in Belfast

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition in which people have persistent difficulties with attention, concentration, and/or controlling activity levels and impulses. It often shows up as being very easily distracted, disorganised, forgetful, or fidgety, and may affect everyday life at school, work, and in relationships.

Yes – we need to ensure that it is appropriate and safe to prescribe before we can issue a prescription. A consultation is required to do this

An ADHD medication review consultation. This will be with Dr Magee or Toner. These are the only doctors at our clinic able to prescribe these medications, which require special authorisation to be able to issue controlled drug medication privately.

Some medicines can only be initiated by a specialist and a GP can only prescribe them if they have been recommended by a specialist and if the specialist continues to supervise the medication – reviewing the patient and the medication regularly to ensure it remains appropriate. ADHD medicines fall into this category.

NHS GP practices are complex organisations with many issues competing for their time and limitations on the funding they receive. A GP when prescribing, must review the appropriateness of the medication (even when recommended by a specialist), ensure that it is safe to prescribe, ensure that a patient is attending an appropriate specialist regularly. Additional caution is required with controlled drug medications (ADHD medication falls into this category). All other shared care drug prescribing is funded separately to core services under enhanced services arrangements e.g. methotrexate. The department of health has written to GP NHS practices advising caution entering into private shared care arrangements. Most NHS GPs in Northern Ireland have started to decline work that is not funded and for which there is a lack of clear governance. Unfortunately ADHD Private shared care falls into this category.

We can issue a prescription for 28d at a time. When a repeat prescription is required patients can email us to request a new prescription.

No – repeat Prescriptions For ADHD must be collected from our practice reception. They are handwritten on a special prescription form and so cannot be emailed.
